FIBER + STEIM are joining forces to put on the first Algorave in Amsterdam, as part of the Code Matter(s) series. There will actually be three days of events from 21st to 23rd March; workshops on day 1, party on day 2, and talks on the final day. More details on their website.
More to come but here’s some photos from the first Sheffield algorave..
and here’s some early video from Shelly and some Mandelbrots:
Edited video to follow..
Venue: Penelopes, Arundel Gate, Sheffield, S1 2PR (a few mins walk from Sheffield train station)
Date: 8pm-1am, Thurday 7th November 2013
- Dazed & confused
“Alexandra Cárdenas has no decks. Instead, she’s working on a laptop. A projection behind shows about 20 lines of code, which she is toying with, stripping some away, modifying the parameters of others. The minimal techno starts piling up, reversing on itself. Complex rhythms emerge, fall away, then come back stronger, energising the crowd. Cárdenas is completely lost in the music. This is an “algorave”, where humans dance to algorithms.”

CURIOUS MACHINE (Sheffield)
- glitch cellular automata from SoYo
- thundering industrial techno from the South.
- progressive and recursive house from Ash Sagar
- legendary algokraut live coders from Durham UK and Karlsruhe DE
- Successfully distilling funk into dynamical datapop since 2001
YAXU and PAUL HESSION (Chordpunch, Sheffield and Leeds)
- Yaxu (member of abstract gabber band Slub) will be joined by renowned improv drummer Paul Hession (of Squarepusher Jazz Trio, among many other collaborations) for what promises to be a heavily percussive set.
Some extra footage from the first MS Stubnitz Algorave back in April 2013:
The camera mic suffers a bit from the (lovely) Stubnitz soundsystem, but a couple videos with recordings from the desk are on their website. Hopefully the Stubnitz will find a suitable return mooring and be back in London next year.
Featuring d0kt0r0, livecodelab (Davide Della Casa + Guy John), Ryan Jordan, Thor Magnusson, Meta-eX, Sick Lincoln, slub, Matthias Schneiderbanger and Matthew Yee-King.
Tickets are all gone, sorry none on the door, we’ll do another one soon though.
New dates added to the event list, in particular Hamilton (Aug 9th), Toronto (Aug 10th), London (Sep 14th), Ljubljana (Oct 14th) and Sheffield (Nov 8th).
Luuma launched his E.P. Tessera at last month’s Brighton and London shows, three slabs of industrial techno built from algorithms and live controllers. The second track, 2.mak, brought the Stubnitz night to a fine crescendo, here’s a clip:
Luuma has shared the closing track “The Photocopier Song” in full, enjoy it here:
The EP is available from all good on-line music stores (and streaming services).
When: 7pm-11:30pm, Thursday 16 May 2013
Where: MS Stubnitz, Montgomery Street, Canary Wharf tube, London E14 9SB
Tax: £10 on the door
We’re back on-board the MS Stubnitz for the 16th May 2013, your last chance to dance to algorithms onboard the art ship (and feel their world famous soundsystem) for a while as they set sail for a festival in France the next day.
Featuring Cursor Miner making dance music in the frequency domain, Ardisson augmenting his tb303 and tr606 acid house with gamelan, Alo Allik twisting his audio/visual algomusic into beat-driven techno, Alexandra Cárdenas live coding minimal techno from supercollider impulses, Martin Klang making Euclidean acid with hybrid digital/analogue algorithms, Shelly and some Mandelbrots uniting Birmingham and Karlsruhe with three-way live coded house, and Meta-eX leading us into the night by live hacking an extended build up with code and controllers.. plus algorave residents Slub (with guest Elvi$ Ca$h) and Sick Lincoln.
Facebook event here.
